Local wildlife conservation projects
Turtle Action Group
A small and dedicated group of members of Coolum District Coast Care have been trained to record data on stranded turtles (both dead and alive) that wash up on our local beaches. During marine turtle nesting season ie. November to March, we are also involved in locating and meshing nests to prevent predation and damage, and monitoring nest safety and progress. In extreme cases, our trained volunteers are able to relocate nests if their safety is threatened by extreme weather, erosion, or lighting issues. We are heavily dependant on regular beach walkers to help us to locate and monitor the nests, and report strandings.
For some general information on what to do if you see stranded or nesting marine turtles, look here.

Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Corridor
The beautiful Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is a Coolum Native but the caterpillars only food plant called the Pararistolochia or Butterfly Vine is fast disappearing with the loss of bushlands. We are encouraging Coolum residents, neighbourhoods, schools and parks to purchase, plant the vine (available at the Coolum Community Native Nursery) and let Coast Care know the location so that we have a continual corridor for butterfly reproduction.

Faunawatch Survey
We commissioned a survey of the fauna found in the bushland on the dunes at the end of Tanah Street East at Yaroomba. The survey was conducted by Faunawatch, and the results are very impressive!
The fauna species list is here.

The curiosity and appetite of our local bush turkeys is the most notable finding!!
